Description: Are you an educator who wants more tools to engage adult students to reflect and take action on the racial, social, and economic justice issues affecting their lives and communities? As part of the Literacy & Justice Initiative, the Literacy Assistance Center (LAC) is collaborating with Make the Road New York (MRNY) and the Chinese-American Planning Council (CPC) to host this online Literacy & Justice Teach-In for adult education teachers and staff who want to learn more about current housing justice organizing campaigns and how to integrate related themes into adult education programs. This session will include a presentation from MRNY housing organizers on NY’s current rent, eviction, and homelessness crisis and policy solutions, including a package of three state bills that, if passed, will stabilize rental housing, support economic recovery, and provide housing for homeless New Yorkers. Participants will try out a basic popular education approach, learn about housing rights in NYC, take action as part of the #CancelRent campaign, and leave with ideas and resources to bring housing justice and other social justice themes into their classes and programs. This is part of a growing area of LAC work to support adult educators to engage and inspire their students to take action on issues that are important to them. Join us! Participation is free, but registration is required.
